Heitersheim Coat of Arms

Shield Gules a Maltese cross Argent.
Meaning:
The Order of St. John acquired the village in 1297. The order established a local commandery in the 14th century, granted rights of a market town and made it seat of the order's German priorate in 1428. The Order tried to get the status of a Free Imperial Territory, but the area remained an Austrian fiefdom until 1797. In 1810 the Grand Duke of Baden granted city rights to the market town. Older seals of the city are not known. In 1895 the city adopted arms displaying above the upper half of the cross of the Knights of St. John and beneath a star Or between two wreaths of the same. Later they had been replaced by two combined initials "HH", meaning "HeitersHeim". Since 1977 the maltese cross remained alone in the shield.
