The area of the subcounty is surrounding the namesake lake. The subcounty was formed in 1992 when nine municipalities from two different former counties (Beeskow and Fürstenwalde) decided to cooperate. The five leaves and four acorns, nine elements together, are probably symbolising the nine municipalities. The base wavy is symbolising the Scharmützelsee (lake).
