The municipality of Ponte Alta do Norte (3,303 inhabitants in 2010; 40,098
ha) is located 310 km west of Florianópolis.
Ponte Alta do Norte was
settled in 1850 by Francisco Pires, a tropeiro from Sorocaba, and his wife Maria
Cordeiro; the couple would have seven sons and four daughters. Ponte Alta was
named for a slate-roofed bridge ("ponte") used by tropeiros to cross the river.
The district of Ponte Alta do Norte was established in 1958 within the
municipality of Curitibanos, to be elevated a municipality on 30 March 1992.

Ponte Alta do Norte gained some national fame during
the 2016 municipal elections, being the first municipality in the country with
proclaimed results, only 12 minutes after the closure of the poll stations; in
2020, the delay increased to 21 minutes, still the shortest time at the state
level.
