Municipality

The municipality of Marema (2,203 inhabitants in 2010; 10,362 ha) is located 550 km west of Florianópolis.

Marema was established in 1940 by colonists of Italian origin coming from Guaporé and Nova Prata. The settlement was originally known as Marrecas (Teals) for the great number of those birds found in wet areas.
The municipality of Marema was established by State Law No. 1,112 promulgated on 11 June 1989, separating from Xaxim. Some say that the new name was a progressive transformation of Marrecas; most probably, the new name was coined, after the marshy area of Maremma, in Italy, since another municipality named Marrecas (today, Francisco Beltrão) already existed.
