Description of the Flag

The flag of Chapecó was designed by Sônia Santos. The coat of arms was designed by Lauro Sant’Anna and Homero M. Franco. The designs were selected in a public contest organized by the municipality in 1973.

The coat of arms is composed of a shield surmounted by a four-towered fortification, representing the municipal institution. The charges of the shield represent three components: Chapecó's early history, rationale as a municipality, and futre affirmation, the whole tenderly surrounded by roses.
The four fields are separated by a perpendicular stripe running from the shield's left to its right, composed of blue and light blue smooth curves symbolizing water. The fields are either white, representing peace and hope, or green, representing agricultural production.

The shield features the Southern Cross, representing the Cross, faith and religious feeling, the five stars being distributed in strategic places.
In the upper left part, the main star rises above a hill and green furrows, symbolizing the colonization's principle. Above the hill, in the firmament, a pair of clouds symbolizes the mild, subtropical climate enjoyed by the inhabitants.
In the lower left quarter, a Brazilian pine, the original cause of colonization by white men. The two joint pines form the world symbol of Cooperation. The star partially concealed by the pine's canopy symbolizes timber extraction, an industry that belonged to the past and progressively disappears.
In the lower right quarter, the shining star symbolizes agriculture, gathering and cropping, which were the base of everything in the past.
In the upper right part, transformation industry is symbolized by a cogwheel, a chimney and a typical industrial building; here the star shines brightly while the chimney's smoke leads to the future. The cogwheel has 17 cogs, as a tribute to year zero of the existence of the municipality of Chapecó.
The cross' central star is placed on the division between past and future, as the physical center of all epochs and also the symbolic spiritual center.

The shield is surrounded by roses, left with flowers indicating that past is immortalized by its perfume, right with buds indicating a stock of future roses for Chapecó.
Beneath the shield, a red scroll inscribed "Chapecó 25/08/17", the date of creation of the municipality.
