Municipality

The municipality of Lauro Müller (15,000 inhabitants in 2017; 27,051 ha) is located 200 km south-west of Florianópolis.

Lauro Müller was known before 1905 under different names, Bom Retiro, Arraial da Mina, and Mina dos Ingleses; the latter name, meaning the English's Mine, was usually shortened to Minas (Mines).
On 25 September 1905, the town was renamed for Lauro Severiano Müller (1863-1926), President of the Santa Catarina province (1889-1890, 1891, 1902-1905), Minister of Industry, Transport and Public Works (1902-1906), and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1912-1917).
The municipality of Lauro Mûller was established by State Law No. 273 promulgated on 6 December 1956, separating from Orleans, and inaugurated on 20 January 1957.

Lauro Mûller is the cradle of coal extraction in Santa Catarina. The first branch of the Dona Tereza Cristina railway was inaugurated in 1885, connecting the "English mines" to the port of Laguna.
Carbonífera Catarinense, a company established in 1999 in Lauro Müller, exploits the Barro Branco, Irapuá and Bonito mines.

Description of the Flag

The flag of Lauro Müller is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 933 promulgated on 23 February 1995.

Article 1.
The municipal flag shall have the following heraldic description: Gyronny white and vert, charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms in full colors outlined in sable.

Article 2.
The features of the flag shall obey the following rules:
I - The flag's width shall be 20 units.
II - The flag's length shall be 38 units.
III - To form the gyronny, the rectangle shall be divided by four right lines crossing each other in the center, one vertical, one horizontal and the two other connecting the quadrilateral's angles.
IV - The first triangle, or gyron, placed dexter at the flag's upper edge, shall be white, the second gyron shall be vert (green) and so on.
V - The field of the shield shall be constituted of a quadrilateral of 7 units in width on 5 units in length, connected in base by a semi-circle of 3.5 units in radius.
VI - The shield's vertical axis matches the flag's vertical axis.
VII - The distance of the shield, the outline sable (black) excluded, to the flag's upper edge is 6 units.
VIII - Each lozenge sable (black) shall be inscribed within an imaginary rectangle of 3 units in width and 1.5 unit in length.
IX - Each lozenge shall be located 0.4 unit from the shield's upper edge and respective lateral edge.
X - The upper angle of the chevron shall be placed on the shield's vertical axis, 1.5 unit from the shield's upper edge, formed by two line segments each running from a point located on the shield's respective edge, 5.5 units from the shield's upper edge.
XI - The chevron shall be of 1.8 unit in width.
XII - The two stars shall be inscribed within imaginary circles with the same center, of 1.8 unit in diameter for the bigger star, golden yellow, and 1 unit in diameter for the smaller one, gules (red).
XIII - The circles' common center shall be located on the shield's vertical axis, 3.15 units from the shield's upper edge.
XIV - The ten-ray wheel shall be inscribed within an imaginary circle of 2.5 units in diameter, whose center is located on the shield's vertical axis, 6.6 units from the shield's upper edge.
XV - The shield's outline, sable (black), shall be 9.1 unit in width.
XVI - The two sides of the flag shall be equivalent.
XVII - The charges of the shield and the gyronny field of the flag shall have the following bright colors:
a) vert - matching Veronese green or an equivalent color
b) blue - matching ultramarine blue or an equivalent color
a) gules - matching light red or an equivalent color
XVIII - The bigger star, prescribed as golden yellow, shall be represented in yellow, matching cadmium yellow or an equivalent color.

Municipal Law No. 1.104 promulgated on 26 June 2001 suppressed Paragraph 1 of Article 1 of the original Law.

§1. In the center of the flag, the outer ornaments of the municipal arms - the towered mural crown and the scroll - shall not be represented.
