Municipality

The municipality of Lages (157,743 inhabitants in 2018; 264,431 ha, therefore Santa Catarina's biggest municipality by its area) is located 225 km south-west of Florianópolis.

Lages is named for the Campos de Lajens (Flagstones' Field), a wide area located between São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. Lajens was already mentioned in the 17th century as a resting place used by tropeiros that conveyed cattle from Rio Grande do Sul to São Paulo.
The town of Lajes was established in 22 November 1766 and elevated a municipality on 25 May 1860. The town was renamed fo Lages in 1960, a written form not compliant with modern Portuguese lexicography.
Lages still has 76,000 bovine cattle, being Santa Catarina's capital of cattle-breeding.

Article 1 of the Law was rephrased by Municipal Law no. 2,416 promulgated on 30 June 1998.

The drawing appended to the Law features the bigger star inscribed in an imaginary circle of 1.5 unit in radius and the smaller ones inscribed in an imaginary circle of 0.75 unit in radius, which does not match the dimensions elusively given in the text. The bigger star is centered on the flag. The center of the lower, left star is located 9.63 units from the flag's upper edge and 6.25 units from the hoist, while the center of the upper, right star is located1 14.37 units from the flag's upper edge and 13.75 units from the hoist.

The flag in actual use, however, is not compliant with the official specifications. The stars are bigger and no longer lined on the ascending diagonal.
