The municipality of Palmeiras das Missões (35,045 inhabitants in 2014; 14,194 ha) is located 370 km of Porto Alegre.

Palmeiras das Missões was first settled in 1724. Mate harvesters renamed the town to Vilinha in 1824, a name subsequently changed to Vilinha do Herval, Vilinha da Palmeira, Santo Antônio de Palmeira, and, eventually, Palmeira das Missões.
