The municipality of IndependÍncia (6,167 inhabitants in 2019; 35,829 ha) is
located 480 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Independ‚ncia is said to have been named by rascals banished from Santo ¬ngelo in 1890 and expelled beyond river Santa Rosa, where they morphed in careful farmers and hunters. One of them, wanting to settle back to Santo ¬ngelo with his family, said to the local authorities: "I want to come back because I have gained my independence." There is absolutely not the least evidence of these events; why the town was called "Independence" is still a matter of conjecture.
