About the Flag

The municipality of Sertaneja (5,3535 inhabitants in 2018; 44,449 ha) is located on the border with the state of São Paulo, 450 km north-west of Curitiba. The municipality is composed of the districts of Sertaneja (seat) and Paranagi.

Sertanejo was established between 1940 and 1945 by Cia. Agricola Barbosa on the territory of the municipality of Cornélio Procópio. The town developed around fazenda Santo Antonio, whose owner, Wanderley Charlach, established a sawmill and initiated the building of wooden huts. A chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua was erected in 1944 by Otávio Charlach.
Sertanejo lacks sources of freshwater, so that the inhabitants had to bring water from Cornélio Procópio, located 6 km away. Municipal Law No. 186 promulgated on 15 March 1950 allowed the release of bonds, which allowed the purchase of a diesel engine, a pump and canes that supplied the town with water.
The district of Sertanejo was established by State Law No. 690 promulgated on 14 December 1950, to be elevated a municipality by State Law No. 790 promulgated on 14 November 1951. The municipality was inaugurated on 14 December 1952.

The flag and arms of Sertaneja are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 344 promulgated on 24 April 1981.

Article 3.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Sertaneja is blazoned as follows.
An ancient / classical Portuguese shield rounded-off in base. Gules two fesses argent a yellow ipê (Tabebuia alba) eradicated flowered proper.
The shield supported dexter by a branch of coffee (Coffea arabica) and sinister by a wheat (Triticum vulgare) plant the two fructed proper crossed in base per saltire above a cogwheel or with six cog inscribing two equilateral inverted triangles [...].
A scroll argent inscribed gules the toponym "SERTANEJA" in Roman modern letters surrounded dexter and sinister by the chronological abbreviation of the municipality's date of inauguration, "14/12" and "1952", respectively.
The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent with six towers, two of them visible in perspective view, and a stylized representation of the fortress of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres aka fortress of Barra de Paranaguá on Honey's island in the bay and municipality of Paranaguá, its gate charged with an escutcheon purpure inscribing an effigy of St. Anthony the patron saint of the town of Sertaneja.

Article 4.
The flag of the municipality of Sertaneja shall be a red rectangle of 14 units in width on 20 units in length charged with two horizontal stripes argent, or bluish white, of 2 units in width and located 2 units from the rectangle's upper and lower edge, respectively. In the field's center, the municipal coat of arms in proportions 4 units on 5 units.

Article 4 was amended by Municipal Law No. 1,124 promulgated on 17 August 2006.
"with two horizontal stripes argent, or bluish white" was substituted by "with two horizontal white stripes".

The red field of the shield represents the municipal territory, with the natural resources and the landscape, where the aspirations and efforts of Sertaneja's people are developed, under different forms of activities and professions, represented by the fesses argent.
The cogwheel or emphasizes the converging and edifying action, constantly renewed, as a preponderant factor of development through creativity, prosperity and circulation of wealth via technology.
The equilateral triangles suggest the synergy that should govern the organization and social and work health, through the division of offices and the convergence of efforts in rural and urban communities, and in political-administrative functions, under the aegis of human fraternity and civic solidarity, the essence of the republican policy of the Brazilian Federation
The stylized figure of the yellow ipê tree in full spring bloom sums up all the strength of the forests that covered the regional territory, as a natural resource. Officially declared a “national tree and flower”, it send a permanent message for recovery and environmental protection in its various ecological aspects, each day more necessary and urgent.
The supporters highlight the resources that fostered which the regional economic and demographic development, from the first moments of clearing to the present-day's predominant activities. Coffee farming was, undoubtedly, the great motivator of primitive colonization. Cereal cultivation, here best represented by the noblest of them, produce surpluses that made Paraná the great granary that it has been and should be, through technological improvement of agriculture in production, productivity, diversification and the practice of soil conservation – all factors of municipal revitalization.
