The symbols of Centar were adopted on 21 October 1999 by the Municipal Assembly, following a public contest.
The flag of Centar is diagonally divided blue, white and golden/yellow with the coat of arms in the middle. It was decided that the colors (yellow and blue) on the flag should be darker than proposed to match those on the flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Coat of arms of Centar - Image by Željko Heimer, 10 April 2005
The coat of arms is "Vert a base gules divided with a wavy bar azure fimbriated argent and overall a golden stylized three with two birds".
The wavy bar represents river Miljacka; the tree is a copy of a tree found on a medieval stading stone (stećak) preserved in the Land Museum in Sarajevo, symbolizing the growth of the municipality and security. The base of the shield is red land from which the tree is growing while the green field is the symbol of the healthy natural environment.

Rejected proposal of ceremonial flag - Image by Željko Heimer, 10 April 2005
The ceremonial flag proposed in 1999 was similar to the regular flag eventually adopted, with lighter shades of blue and yellow and having a ceremonial version of the coat of arms in the middle. Neither the ceremonial coat of arms nor the ceremonial flag were adopted.
The ceremonial coat of arms pictures two flags, sinister the flag of the Town of Sarajevo, at the time already abandoned in 1998, and dexter an intended stylization of the flag of the Canton of Sarajevo, at the time also in the process of adoption.
