Nemasket Nation is unrecognized Indian tribe, based in Medford Massachusetts.
The present-day Nemasket Council, Founders and Advisors represent a long and
storied tradition of Walmsley descendants working to establish our Indigenous
rights. The modern day journey began with the late Bernice (Walmsley) Young
(Swift Wind) and her late siblings, Edward, Jerry, Jr., Robert and Richard, who
worked tirelessly throughout their lifetimes to bring recognition to the
Walmsley family for, as Great Moose put it: “the remarkable lineage to
Massasoit” and to those Indigenous leaders of the original Tribes of the
17th-century first contact.
Swift Wind, along with her daughter Diane
LaFrance, her granddaughter Roxanne Young-Perry, her grandson Wayne Young and
her great nephew, the late Deon Walmsley collaborated with the Late Russell
Gardner (Great Moose), the Wampanoag Historian, who certified the Walmsley
family as descendants of, in his words: “Massasoit Ousemaquin through his
daughter Aime and the Sachem Tuspaquin of Nemasket.”
In 2018, the Council
and Founders were given the task of reviving the Nemasket Tribal Nation in the
21st-century and beyond.

The
Nemasket seal was created to honor and recognize our Ancestors.
The
elements of the Nemasket seal embody a blue sky and sun shinning upon the
Nemasket River and Assawampsett Pond with many pines, a place of the white rock,
the abundance of herring, freshwater mussels, and a wigwam which signifies a
place of meeting, replenishment and peace.
