The Band

Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians

Part of the Kumeyaay (Diegueño) Nation. Other Kumeyaay bands are: Barona, Campo, Capitan Grande, Cuyapaipe, Inaja-Cosmit, La Posta, Manzanita, San Pascual, Santa Ysabel, Sycuan, Viejas and Jamul Indian Village.

Established by the Executive Orders of 1875 and 1883, expanded in 1926 and 1998 to the present borders.

Location: Eastern San Diego County, near the mountain community of Santa Ysabel on the high plateau (over 3,500 ft) often blanketed by snow in the winter. The area is spectacularly scenic and part of it is used as a rangeland for the herd of buffalo. Mesa Grande members are exporting the low-fat, high protein food source to the other Indian Nations in the country. They do not have a casino, (yet).

Area: 1,803 acres
Population: @ 630 enrolled members of which aobut 180 live on the reservation.
