Lavalette Yacht Club was founded 13 August 1904 in Lavalette. As such, its
location was on the narrow stretch between Barnegat Bay and the ocean.
Originally it was built on a ocean-front lot. In 1907 a bay-side lot was added,
and when in 1914 the Oceanside clubhouse was damaged, an easy solution was
available.
1914 was also the year the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing
Association was formed, and the LYC list themselves as first-year members. This
does not agree very well with
comments on
Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association page, but note the wording: The LYC
doesn't claim it was charter member, just that somewhere during the first year
they joined.
In 1943 the Club acquired title to the easterly portion of
the sedge islands at the northern end of town, and eventually, they moved there.
In 2012, the LYC became a founding member of the National Sailing Hall of
Fame. In late 2012, the club and its marina were in shambles by the passage
of storm Sandy. After that, everyone set their minds to rebuilding the club
for the 2013 season.
All this was done under a burgee: Red, with a white
lozenge throughout, bearing a red 'L'. I guess the 'L' stands for Lavalette.
