Christopher Baker, Marketing Director & Webmaster of HYS, helped me write a report for Halifax Youth Sailing (www.halifaxyouthsailing.org). Or rather, most of what he wrote was so clear that I simply asked permission to send it to FOTW:
The burgee of Halifax Youth Sailing is a slightly shallow broad pennant, just shy of 2:3. It shows a white stylised Y running from the hoist through the middle of the flag to form the fly edges. Above the Y the field is red, below it the field is blue. [As a Dutchman, I couldn't agree more with that order of colours.]
Christopher writes about the burgee:
"I began the design on October 3, 2008. The first version included an H and an S in horizontal orientation but the letters didn't work on the reverse view of the burgee and we elected to keep it simple with just the stylized Y in the
swallowtail. It was adopted by acclamation of the HYS Board on October 7, 2008, after the H and S were removed. It was registered on October 17, 2008. The colors are derivative of the colors of the Halifax Sailing Association's burgee
[red, white, & blue triangle] of which the HYS was originally a part before becoming its own 501(c)(3) non-profit group."
About the HYS, Christopher writes:
Halifax Youth Sailing is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to teaching kids to sail in the Volusia/Flagler [Daytona Beach metro] county area. Our goal is to imbue each child with a love of the water, respect for the power of the elements, the value of teamwork and leadership, the basics of sailing, and the desire to continue to spread the word that sailing is for everyone. The HYS was named for the water it sails, the Halifax River, which is that section of the Intracoastal Waterway that bisects this area between the mainland and the barrier islands of central Florida.
The burgee is the only flag the HYS uses.
