The version of the University of Richmond seal that appears on the flag in
the photo that Dave found does not appear to be any of the official versions of
the shield. It makes me wonder if the photo is actually of an unofficial flag
rather than the flag officially used by UR.

The shield on the flag in the photograph shows no white fimbriation in the
dark blue bars above and below the word "RICHMOND." The official logo has a
thick dark blue bar at the top, a thin white stripe, then a thin dark blue
stripe, before the white chief bearing the word "RICHMOND," followed by another
thin dark blue stripe, thin white stripe, and then the dark blue outline of the
shield, followed by what looks to be a dark blue orle on white, and then the red
and white checker pattern. On the flag, all of those thin white stripes are
missing, as well as the orle around the checker pattern. That's what I was
referring to as not matching the official logos and therefore possibly being an
unofficial flag.
Of course, I also found another photograph of yet
another version of the flag. This one is at (https://farm1.staticflickr.com/65535/52070005757_8c17597478.jpg)
and shows the university flag being carried alongside the American flag during
the annual commencement ceremony. This flag also has the university logo
centered on a white field. The logo, in this case, has the shield as described
above, with the word "RICHMOND" in blue text on white, the words "UNIVERSITY OF"
in white letters on the dark blue bar above, and the words "FOUNDED 1830" in
white letters on the dark blue bar below. This logo does not appear on the
university website in the branding center, and I suspect it may be a previous
version of the logo. Since it appeared on a flag being carried during the
commencement ceremony, my assumption is that the flag was official as it was
acting in an official capacity, leading to my speculation that it's a previous
version. But I don't know for sure.
