The proposed Coat of Arms of Chevy Chase Village was presented to the Board
of Managers by Mr. Leonard Humphrey, Jr. (Village Board Member, Treasurer and
Engineer) in April 1974 as designed by himself, Ms. Edith Claude Jarvis (Village
Historian) and a young neighbor of Mr. Humphrey's believed to be the artist. The
Board adopted the design in the early 1980's.
The upper portion depicts
the top part of the Great Seal of Maryland consisting of sections of the Calvert
and Crossland Arms. The Black-eyed Susan, Maryland's State Flower, is shown in
the border below Chevy and Chase.
The lower portion represents the Coat
of Arms of the Montgomery family and denotes loyalty, truth, military courage
and prowess; all virtues required of a knight serving a king. Fleurs-de-lis in
the lower right corner are reminders of the French ancestry of the Montgomery
family. The rings with blue stones proclaim royal favor and protection. The
three leaf clover in the center border of the shield portrays Hope, Joy and
Victory.
The center portion represents two of the main references to
Chevauchée in days of old (since passed on to Chevy Chase). They are the
Scottish thistle, and the red bloodied arrow which killed English Lord Percy on
the Cheviot Hill of Scottish Earl Douglas in 1308.
The crown at the top
of the Coat of Arms represents the Board of seven Managers governing Chevy Chase
Village. The Village flag waves above all.
