Description of the Flag

The first flag of Essex County was designed by pupils of the Essex County Training School and approved by the Board of Commissioners in September 1919. Proportions were 3:5. It was produced by Mrs. Hodder, superintendent of the Women's Prison.

The flag displays a plow and sheaf of wheat in the upper left-hand corner, representing agriculture; mills with smoking chimneys, representing manufacturing; a beehive and busy bees, representing industry; horns of plenty on each side, representing abundance; and finally, centered is the county seal. Over all is an eagle, representing the protection of America.
