Presentation

The Cherkas'ka Community (Черкаська міська громада) is one of 26 communities in Cherkas'kyy Raion. It was created in 2020 when the independent City of Cherkasy was dissolved, together with other five independent cities in Cherkas'ka Region, and became part of Cherkas'kyy Raion. The Cherkas'ka Community contains the City of Cherkasy and the Settlement of Orshanets' (which is part of the Cherkasy City Council). The City of Cherkasy has two inner-city counties – Prydniprovs'kyy County and Sosnivs'kyy County. The Community has about 78 km² with about 276'000 inhabitants.
The Community has no symbols of its own, but is using the symbols of the City of Cherkasy (This is common practice; the symbols of the administrative seat are in use, until the distinct symbols are adopted).
The other entities in the Cherkas'ka Community have no symbols, as far as I know.

City of Cherkasy

Variant

Flag adopted on 26.7.1995 by the City Council. A rectangular white canvas, the city's coat of arms is placed in the central part. The coat of arms is framed by a decorative wreath symbolizing the tree of life topped with a trident. Under the shield an red ribbon with a golden inscription "Cherkasy". Creators: D.G. Narbut and M. Telizhenko. There are versions with and without inner border.

Coat of Arms

Since 1995

Adopted on 11.1.1995 by the City Council. The shield is crossed. On the upper azure part, a Cossack in red clothes, holding a rifle on his shoulder, with a saber and a powder magazine on his belt; on the left is a red silver horse galloping to the left. Cherkasy during the XV–XVIII centuries was one of the centers of Ukrainian Cossacks – that is why a Cossack is depicted in the upper field. The heraldic horse in the upper field is a generalizing symbol that combines the bravery of a lion, the vision of an eagle, the strength of a wolf, the speed of a deer, the agility of a fox, thus reproducing the qualities of the people who lived in this locality, and the ancient city coat of arms of 1852. Creators: O. Tolkushyn and A. Pendyura.

1985–1995

Adopted on 18.9.1985 by the City Council. The shield is crossed azure and red. On the shield – a silver rider on a silver horse, holding a golden sheaf of ears of corn in his raised hands. Under the rider three golden waves. On the head of the golden cartouche is the black name of the city in Ukrainian, on its base is a hammer and sickle. The horse is an element of the historical coat of arms, a symbol of steppe spaces and Cossack youth. The young rider expresses the image of Cherkasy, the youngest regional center of the republic. Creators: M. Telizhenko, A. Petrenko, O. Kostogryz.

1852–1985

The coat of arms of Kyiv is on the upper part of the crossed shield; on the right a red and silver horse galloping to the left. The shield is crowned with a silver city crown with five towers.

1791–1852
