The Clube Sport Marítimo is the main sports club of the city of
Funchal, capital of Madeira,
and therefore of the whole archipelago. The club was founded in the beginning
of this century by english emigrants, numerous at the time in the islands,
and presently it’s football team in in the portuguese first division, and
already played in the european competitions. The flag reflects closely the
club’s origins: it’s a red St. George’s cross on
a green field. A white lozenge is superimposed in the center of the flag
and contains the club’s emblem: a nautical wheel with a lion superimposed
facing the hoist, but looking backwards to the fly, all in proper colours,
and a green-red scroll above with the club’s acronym in black capitals: C.S.M.
Also interesting in this emblem is that it is not based on the civic local
heraldry of Funchal, unlike most of the other
club’s emblems in Portugal.

Located in Funchal and established on 20 September 1910, Maritimo in the past had been the club of the fishermen and dockers. Today it is one of the two profi football clubs of Funchal, playing in the Portuguese premier league in 2012, which is remarkable in so far, as Funchal is a fairly small city. The traditional colours are red and green. The flag is green divided by a red centred cross. The centre is superimposed by a white lozenge fimbriated black displaying the logo, a lion in natural colour holding a white football. Above is a green over red scroll with a black inscription "MARITIMO". Beneath the lion is a black inscription "MADEIRA".
