It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of green and white.

The current banner (see left image above) has additional silver and green tassels and cord and a gilted flag pole with arrow shaped finial. Before the 1930 regulations the town had already a slightly different banner (see central image above), quartered of white and green with centred arms but without mural crown, tassels and cord and slightly different inscription on scroll as follows: "VILLA DE COLARES".
The Comissão de Heráldica da Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses (CHAAP) issued a draft, made by Antonio Lima, during its session on 7 March 1923. In June 1925 the town council decided to add a mural crown (see right image above). When the current design was established, is unknown. The current flag and banner have perhaps never been approved officially.

Shield Gules with base Vert crowned by an embattled tower Or masoned Sable with port and windows Sable flanked by four trees Proper (two at either side), in chief three necklaces Or ordered per fess. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "VILA DE COLARES"
Meaning:
The necklaces are said having been a pawn for the real estates, which had been acquired from the Moorish King Zeilão for Lady de Compa, a countess of German origin. Furthermore they are canting elements (Port.: colar (= necklace)). The tower is alluding to a former local castle, later on a palace but now in ruins. The trees and the green base are symbolising the fertility of the region.

A draft had been presented by the Comissão de Heráldica da Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses (CHAAP) during its session on 7 March 1923, but an official approval didn´t occur.

Presentation of Colares

Colares is one of the 11 communes of the Sintra municipality; it had 7628 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 33,4 km².
