It is unclear when the coat of arms of Diego de Mazariegos was adopted as the coat of arms of the city. The legend at the bottom was added to the coat of arms by the city. The coat of arms depicts two scrolls to the side of the shield; under the shield is a ribbon that reads the legend "DIEGO DE MAZARIEGOS", the founder of the city and his coat of arms. Above the shield is lambrequin, having mantling in green, and blue; blue emerges from the helmet of a knight, signifying Diego's status as a descendant of the high nobility. The red shield depicts eight castles for his Castilian origin, surrounding a yellow inescutcheon in the center with a cross fleury.

The original coat of arms of San Cristobál de las Casas was granted on 1 March 1535 by King Carlos I of Spain, after a petition from the colonial attorney of the city Juan Méndez de Sotomayor. Apparently, after the capital of Chiapas moved to Tuxtla Gutiérrez in 1892, which caused a major civil dispute in the state, it led to the end of the use of the coat of arms of the City (which then became the emblem of the State). It has ornamentation in its exterior in gold, with the top part having a long set of leaves. Above the shield is a royal crown, signifying its loyalty during the colonial era. In the center of the shield, a steep canyon is depicted representing the Cañón del Sumidero, with hills and trees seen at its end. The left side depicts, over it, a lion supporting a castle, representing the Crown of Castile as being the ones who granted the coat of arms to the city. To the right, a lion supports a palm tree, representative of its tropical climate.
