Clem Wilson, a long time resident of Cromford, designed the flag in 2008 and,
in 2010 a number of flags were produced, using his original design. These have
been displayed throughout the village on festive occasions ever since.
Clem Wilson designed the flag with the history of the area in mind. The mill,
millpond and wheel represent the influence Sir Richard Arkwright had not just on
the village, but on the whole world when, as, you know, in the late 18th
Century, he built a series of mills in the Cromford area which have subsequently
been recognised as the first factories in the world resulting in Cromford being
recognised as a World Heritage Site.
The next step was to get the design
registered with The Flag Institute. The Flag institute is the UK's
leading research and documentation centre for flags and flag information. The
Institute is also the largest vexillological membership organisation in the
world. The Flag Institute also maintains and manages the national United
Kingdom Flag Registry.
After discussion with the Communities
Vexillologist at the Flag Institute a design was approved by him and the Chief
Vexillologist. They were extremely helpful and endlessly patient. The major
changes made were to the colour scheme of the flag which needed to have a
specific meaning and significance.
The colour scheme of the flag is a
double representation, following both the scheme of the Derbyshire County flag
(registered with the Flag Institute in 2006 as a result of a Radio Derby
campaign), and also, by a lucky coincidence, echoing the colour scheme of Sir
Richard Arkwright’s coat of arms.
The individual colours therefore have
the following double meaning:
Derbyshire County flag (from Flag Institute
registry info) -
Green = fields of Derbyshire
Blue = the rivers of
Derbyshire
Gold = a representation of quality
Sir Richard
Arkwright’s’ coat of arms colour scheme has the following meanings (from
heraldsnet.org:
Green = cotton bush
Blue = the water to drive his
mills
Gold = the wealth that cotton bought to the Arkwright family and to
the area
The precise pantone colours of the Cromford flag have been
set as follows: Blue 542, Gold 137, Green 354, White, Grey 426.
