Presentation of SNA

Société Nationale d'Affrêtements was founded in 1916 by the railway company PLM (Paris-Lyon-Marseille) for the transport of coal imported from England.
On 31 August 1937, the French railway companies were nationalized by the Front Populaire government; the newly formed state company (SNCF) inherited the PLM fleet, then made of 14 ships. SNA kept the management of the SNCF fleet until 1963, when the company and its last eight ships were purchased by SAGA, a company founded in 1919 by the Rothschild Bank for the management of state-owned ships that withdrew from shipping in 1982.

The PLM fleet was made of 24 ships named P.L.M. 1 to P.L.M. 27 - P.L.M. 11, P.L.M. 18 and P.L.M. 19 have not been recorded. Out of the 24 ships, 19 were lost at sea (1 during the First World War and 12 during the Second World War), that is 80% of the fleet.
