Flayosc (4,514 inhabitants in 2022 on 4,595 ha) is a commune in the Var department.
The Celto-Ligurians established a lookout post at the top of the rocky promontory that monitored the access road to the oppidum of Saint-Lambert, located 5 km to the northwest. After the destruction of Antea by the Romans, many families settled in the territory of Flayosc. Three kilometers from the village, near the chapel of Saint-Pierre de Lavarron, many Gallo-Roman remains have been discovered. In Flayosc itself, the chapel of the "Eternal Father" of which some remains remain in a cellar, was built on the site of an ancient temple Christianized before the 5th century.
The Saracens destroyed the village which, under the impetus of its lords, the Villeneuve, quickly rose from its ruins. A powerful fortified enclosure surrounded the new town. In the 14th century, Queen Jeanne granted the inhabitants many franchises, including the right to capture the waters of the river Flaielle to supply the village. The barony was established by letters patent of January 1678 as a marquisate, in favor of François de Périer, Councilor to the Parliament of Provence in 1636.
Alexandre de Villeneuve, Marquis of Flayosc, took refuge in Aix during the French Revolution. On May 3, 1792, under the leadership of the mayor, Jean-François Bérard, municipal officers and the justice of the peace, Vincent Lombard, the inhabitants armed with picks and mattocks, went to the castle. They broke down the doors, tore off the gates, the windows and destroyed the furniture, the books in the library and the seigneurial archives. In a single night, they demolished the old feudal residence of the Villeneuves. This act was condemned by the local authorities, but the Legislative Assembly in Paris congratulated them.
In the 19th century, Flayosc became the great centre of footwear. The many shoemakers who worked there were nicknamed "lei pegot": those who handle pitch. A faience factory and brickworks were also established in Flayosc. Thanks to this economic activity, the village enjoyed a prosperous period until the beginning of the 20th century.
