Coat-of-arms of Marmagne

The arms of Marmagne are blazoned: Gules a fountain of Argent and Azure in an annulet Argent, chapé ployé of the same charged with two confronting axes Sable, the one at dexter bendwise, the other one at sinister per bend sinister.

The ornament in the center - a heradic fountain - is shown in the current representation of the arms with simple black wavy lines on the red field, instead of the traditional Argent and azure wavy pieces. It symbolizes the beautiful fountain in the village offered by Schneider, master of the forges of Le Creusot. The chapé-ployé represents the mantle shared by Saint Martin, patron saint of the parish. The battle axes remind that the name of Marmagne seems to come from the Germans (Marcomans), some of whom had settled in Marmagne from the 3rd century. These groups would have given their name to the village, Marcomania which, around the 10th century was to be transformed into Marmanica, Marmaigne in the 14th century, and finally Marmagne.
