Presentation of Morlanne

Morlanne (Béarnese: Morlana; 612 inhabitants in 2021; 1,294 ha) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.

The first known lord of Morlanne is Gailhard de Morlanne, cited in 1060. During the Hundred Years War Gaston Fébus, the eleventh count of Foix (as Gaston III) and viscount of Béarn (as Gaston X), chose Morlanne as a defensive bastion (dominating the northern slope of the Luy de Béarn valley). The village was then made up of two agglomerations, one around the castle, Castetbieilh, and the other around the church.

The barony of Morlanne was created in 1643, and was a vassal of the Viscounty of Béarn. The village has retained the image of an organized settlement from its past. However, the classic Béarn houses of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries have replaced the older houses, often transforming the plot distribution.
