The municipality of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin (7,437 inhabitants in 2018; 8,612 ha; municipal website) is located 20 km of Orléans.
La Ferté-Saint-Aubin might have emerged around a small fortress (Latin, firmitas) watching the crossing of river Cosson. The village was subsequently named after its successive feudal lords, La Ferté-Nabert (11th century), La Ferté-Senectaire (16th century), and La Ferté-Lowendal (18th century).
Renamed to La Ferté-Cosson under the French Revolution, the town was eventually named La Ferté-Saint-Aubin, for one the two parishes that compose the town.
On 10 June 1944, 29 anti-German fighters were slaughtered in the By farm. Aged 18 to 20, they were mostly students at the École des Sciences Politiques in Paris heading to the Sologne maquis. Another 12 students were caught in the neighborhood and shot.

The flag of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin, as observed in 2001, is white with the municipal logo, which features a gate and an oak leaf.
The gate represents the entrance gate of the castle of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin and the facade of the Town Hall, conveying an idea of passage and openness. The oak leaf symbolizes the solidity of the environment. It is brick-colored like the brick from Sologne, green like an oak leaf and blue like the ponds. Straightened up, the oak leaf is a sign of dynamism.
The castle of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin (website) was increased in the 17th century by architect Théodore Lefebvre for Henri II de Saint-Nectaire (1599-1681), indeed Henri II de La Ferté-Senneterre, who was created Marshal of France on 5 January 1651 and Duke-Peer of France in November 1665.
Woldemar de Lowendal (1700-1755), a German officer, created in 1744 the Regiment of Lowendal to serve the king of France. He was created Marshal of France in 1747 after the victorious siege of Bergen-op-Zoom.
