The municipality of Espinosa de Villagonzalo (211 inhabitants in 2009; 3,804 ha; municipal website) is located 60 km from Palencia.
Espinosa de Villagonzalo is named for Latin spinus, "a hawthorn"; the -osa suffix indicates that the place was crowded with hawthorn. "de Villagonzalo", added in the 19th century to the name of the village, recalls the long disappeared settlement of Villagonzalo, probably named for the Gothic lord Gundisalvus. At the end of the 11th century, the today's municipal territory indeed included the settlements of Spinosa, Villa Gonzalo and another disappeared hamlet, Castrogonzalo. In the late 12th century, King Alfonso VIII granted Espinosa de Villagonzalo to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
