Presentation of Villaverde del Monte

The municipality of Villaverde del Monte (163 inhabitants in 2010; 3,731 ha; municipal website) is located 25 km of Burgos. The municipality is made of the villages of Villaverde del Monte (capital) and Revenga de Muñó (60 inh.).
Villaverde del Monte was mentioned for the first time in 1351, as Villa Uercede del Monto, then a hamlet of Minno. Minno, indeed Muñó, resettled in 912 by Count Munio Núñez, was once one of the most important fortified villages in Province of Burgos, but nothing has remained of it today.

Symbols of Villaverde del Monte

The flag and arms of Villaverde del Monte were originally prescribed by a Decree adopted on 10 September 1998 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 28 September 1998 by the President of the Government and published on 9 October 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 195 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1, green. In the middle is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Argent, or a mound [monte] proper ensigned with a tower surrounded with houses, 2. Azure two cauldrons or per pale. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History rejected the proposed coat of arms. The opportunity to include the arms of a local lineage, deemed important, is not supported by feudal rights that would justify this inclusion. Moreover, these arms are those of the famous Guzmán lineage, this being a source of confusion. The representation of a group of small houses below a tower is not compliant either with the Spanish tradition or schematization required in heraldry.
The Academy also rejected the proposed flag, which features the rejected coat of arms, calling for a new proposal.
[Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia 197:2, 366. 2000]

The municipality appears to have adopted a new coat of arms, derived from the original one but without taking into account the Academy's recommendations.
The coat of arms of Villaverde del Monte is prescribed by an Agreement adopted on 15 June 2005 by the Municipal Council, signed on 4 July by the Mayor and published on 3 August 2005 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 149, p. 13,865 (text).
The arms are described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Argent a pile inverted vert (green) a town argent, 2a. Argent a holly oak proper, 2b. Azure two caldrons or with snakes vert as handles in pale a bordure gules eight saltires or. The shield surmounted by a Spanish Royal crown.
The 1st quarter makes the arms canting, representing the village's name.
The 2nd quarter represents the municipality's natural environment.
The 3rd quarter represents history, featuring the arms of the Guana lineage, much rooted in the population.

We can assume that the description of the flag, green with the coat of arms in the center, is still valid and, accordingly, was not amended.
