Overview

The parish of Zapallo, composed of 35 communities, forms the south-western corner of Flavio Alfaro canton.

Zapallo was first settled by Salatiel Rivera Zambrano, a native from Rocafuerte. The place was named for the great number of squash
(Cucurbita maxima; Spanish: "zapallo") found there by the early colonists.
