Brief History

Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S was founded by Mads Christian Holm in 1871. 1872 the first vessel of the company, the steamship NORDEN, is launched. Mads Christian Holm founded the Helsingør Shipyard in 1884. In 1892 the company acquired a new domicile at No 49, Amaliegade. NORDEN´s first motor vessel NORDBO was delivered in 1923. The fleet of 9 vessels was reduced by 4 during WW2, 3 of which got lost in allied services. 1973 NORDEN entered what today is the core business of the company, when the first of 5 dry cargo vessels is delivered from Japan. In 1990 a tanker department was established. 1994 Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S merged with Dampskibsselskabet Orient. The latter continued as the "operating" company, but the name is changed to Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S.
Between 2006 and 2019 the company expanded and established offices in Singapore, Annapolis, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Melbourne, Santiago de Chile, Vancouver and Abidjan. A new growth strategy based on long-term charters with purchase options was set in place in 1997. Hence, NORDEN took a giant step from minor shipowner to major tramp shipping company. The company established Norient Product Pool with pool-partner Interorient Navigation Company Ltd., Cyprus in 2005. The 100% ownership of Norient Product Pool was acquired in 2018. NORDEN moved into its new domicile Bryghuset in 2008. The same year celebrated its largest COA ever - 15 million tonnes of coal over a 15-year period. It should be mentioned here, that source does not refer to any of the Brown companies.

Dampskibselskabet "Norden" was established in 1871 by Mads Christian Holm. That had also been the name of its first steamship in 1872.
Ole Andersen, 16 Nov 2002

Dampskibselskabet "Norden", Peter Brown, followed by P. Brown Jnr & Co., were operators at least, possibly even owners, although they are not mentioned by Lloyds from the 1960s. Sources usually showed both names but Stewart (1953) has only shown that of Brown.

P. Brown jun. & Co. Flag

The company was based in København. P. Brown Jun. & Co. refer my comments for Dampskibselskabet "Norden" for this appears to be their flag. Brown was an operator for other companies as well, which also had their own flags, one of which has been shown under the name of the operator. They go back to 1893, originally as Peter Brown, and sources do show under P. Brown Jnr & Co. a red flag with a centred white initial "B" which would appear to be actually theirs.
