Marktleuthen Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, at dexter two intertwined serpents Gules crowned Or, at sinister a lion rampant Or armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
The market town was augmented in 1429. The oldest seal, known by prints since 1477, displayed a lion, surely being the heraldic animal of the Burgraves of Nürnberg. Unknown is the origin of the serpents. It is assumed that the are based on the legend of the adder king. The current pattern already appeared on a seal from the 17th century, paintings from 1692 and 1767 and an architectural sculpture on a bridge from 1756. The tinctures were fixed in 1812. A crest was abolished in 1819. Marktleuthen gained city rights in 1954.
