The main reservation is located in Colorado's La Plata and Montezuma counties, although some tribesmen live also in San Juan County, NM and San Juan County, UT. There is a White Mesa Community in Utah (near Blanding) which is part of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe but largely autonomous. These are the descendants of Weeminuche Band whose territory was abounding the present Four Corners area of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. The modern reservation of this federally recognized tribe was established in 1897. The tribal membership was 1,262 strong in 1990.
