From the Rome News-Tribune, 9 July 2002:

Chickamauga's new city flag, the first the city has ever adopted, combines the Confederate battle flag, the 34-star Union flag and the city's logo. Chickamauga has adopted a city flag bearing the Confederate battle flag, the old 34-star Union flag, as well as the city's logo. "The city of Chickamauga has never had a city flag, and I think it's time the city had a flag," Chickamauga city and utilities manager John Culpepper said. City officials said they are not worried about any repercussions coming from the adoption of a flag bearing the Confederate logo. The two flags represent the banners that flew over the armies while they were battling for Chickamauga during the Civil War, Culpepper said. "This flag represents our history, and that's all it represents," he said. "It's not sending a message to anyone. "It doesn't have anything to do with politics. It's the history of our town." Many people do not know 80 percent of the Union troops involved in the famous battle marched right through the area now known as downtown Chickamauga, Culpepper said. "You're talking about 40,000 to 45,000 troops," he said. "A lot of those men, the last drink of water they took before they were killed in battle came right out of that (Crawfish) spring right there." The left portion of the flag features the city seal with the original city name of Crawfish Springs and the years 1833-1891 and Chickamauga's founding date. "Sept. 11 is a date ingrained in everyone's mind, but, believe it or not, the city of Chickamauga was incorporated on Sept. 11, 1891," Culpepper said. "I think it's a good example of what has made this community and a good example of where we're headed in the future," Councilman Mark Askew said.
