November 1967 issue of National City Star-News
According to the National City Star-News issue of 20 July 1967, the first
flag of National City was adopted after a contest held by the Chamber of
Commerce. 17 entries were received in this contest, and the winning flag was
recommended to the city council, who approved of it and purchased a copy for its
chambers. The date it became official is not known, but it is certain it is
anywhere from July 16–20, 1967. The designer was Mrs. George Waters, who was the
wife of a city planning commissioner. The idea of a contest began with the city
advertising committee of the Chamber of Commerce, which formed a committee
headed by Charles Terrell.
The flag bears 5 white stars, representing the
mayor and four city councilmen in the upper left, the governing body of the
city. Centered inside of it was the city seal. An orchid, which had been
recently adopted as the city's official flower (although likely not recognized
today) is in the lower right corner. It is said this orchid was adopted as an
official city symbol because of the large commercial orchid industry during that
time within city limits. It is divided diagonally, using orchid purple for the
city flower, and white. Waters did confirm the official city flower gave her
inspiration for choosing orchid purple to go on the flag, white simply because
it looked nice with purple.
