As aeronautics had been growing rapidly in Turkey and all over the world. the THK planned to establish a university "in order to meet the increasing demand for educated personnel; train people to become qualified staff equipped with high-end theoretical and practical knowledge; and promote the academic studies in aeronautics, quantitatively and qualitatively."
On 21 April 2010 the Aeronautical Foundation was established in order to realize the project under the control of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). The proposal of establishment of the University of Turkish Aeronautical Association was negotiated, accepted, and enacted on 17 February 2011 by the Turkish National Assembly. The relevant Law No. 6,114 was approved by the President of the Republic and it became valid with publication on 3 March 2011 in the Turkish official gazette, No. 27,863.
The flag of the university is blue withthe university's emblem in the middle. The emblem of the university is derived form the emblem of the THK. Here the ring is white, inscribed with "THK" (top) in blue and "ÜNIVERSİTESİ:" (bottom) in white letters outlined in blue. "2011" is inscribed in white letters on the blue disk, beneath the aeroplane, which is light blue.
