Jorge Candeias, 18 July 1999
Vendas Novas had its development based in the establishment of the Artillery School of the Portuguese Army and a railway station that is the interface of two railway lines. On 21 August 1911 it was promoted from aldeia (village) to the rank of vila (town). On 7 September 1962 was created the concelho (municipality) of Vendas Novas (dettached from Montemor-o-Novo). Finally, in 1993, Vendas Novas was up-ranked from vila to cidade (city).
Francisco Santos, 16 Apr 2003
In 1993 Vendas Novas was up-ranked from vila to cidade. The new status originated two heraldic and vexillogical changes: from 4 to 5-towered mural crown in the coat of arms, and the flag from quartely to gironny flag. Both changes follow
the Portuguese general rules on the matter.
Francisco Santos, 16 Apr 2003
