It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

Shield Argent, a valley flanked by two mountains Vert over a base wavy of Argent and Azure, above the valley an impending orb Gules garnished Sable, the orb is crowned by a red cross patty charged with a Greek cross Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "COVAS - VILA NOVA DE CERVEIRA".
Meaning:
The orb is an attribute of Jesus Christ as the Divine Saviour, the local patron saint. Its cross is alluding to the Order of Christ.
