Nordeste municipality had 5291 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 9 communes covering 101,51 km², taking up the NE half of St. Michael Island (São Miguel). It is part of Azores Region (also a NUTS II and traditional province), former Angra do Heroísmo District.
