It is a fairily typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a background gyronny of yellow and blue (see image at top), and erroneously also gyronny of blue and yellow (see image above).

The arms are Azure a representation of Our Lady of Esposende dressed Argent and caped Azure nimbed Or with the cape windflowing and surrounded by five five-pointed estoiles Or above a sailship Argent with three masts Sable. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "ESPOSENDE".

Published in Diário da República: III Série on 27 April 1995. These arms and flag were adopted upon the upgrade of the municipality seat to city status in 2 July 1993 and are a trivial change of the former arms and flag.

The plain flags have been gyronny of eight of yellow and blue (see left image above) or erroneously gyronny of eight of blue and yellow (see right image above).
The former arms and flag were published in Diário da República: III Série on 13 February 1985, a remarkably late date. These included the usual town attributes, four visible crown towers and blue and yellow quartered flag.

The plain flag was quartered of blue and yellow.

Esposende Municipality had 33 325 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 15 communes covering 95,18 km². It is part of Braga District, traditional province Minho, 1999 ref. adm. region Entre Douro e Minho, current C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Cávado.
