The company was first named Transportes Aéreos Portugueses (something like "portuguese air transport"), abbreviated TAP. In 1981, along with a redesign of logo and livery, the name was change to "TAP - Air Portugal". In March 2005, a new visual identy redesign brought yet a new name: "TAP Portugal".

The company flag, (which I had never saw before, though the logo has been quite conspicuous in Portugal) shows the logo in white on red with a narrow (~1/4) stripe along the top of the flag.

This logo, adopted in the early 1980’ies, is itself inspired by the national flag — something smaller green and something red bigger. This pattern also in the airliner livery (on line example).

I have been neglecting this flag, although TAP's redoubt at Lisboa airport has been my workplace for fiftteen months now. Although the corporate identity of TAP was changed in March 2005, only early this year the company flag in use was changed to reflect the new logo. Indeed, if anything, the flag with the 198X-2005 logo was in more visible use after the change than before it, based on my personal observations in loco_. (This may reflect internal opposition to the change or to those in charge of it.)
The new flag is white with the logo on it (in the variation named internally "Vertical Signature A", "Assinatura Vertical A") which shows the logo with the lettering as high (and as separated from the logo) as each of the logo's letters thickness, starting rightwards from below the "P".
The logo consists of blockish sans-serif capitals "TAP" overlapped with apparent transparency; "T" and "A" are yellowish green and their overlapping is light green, "P" is red and its overlapping with "A" is dark red.
These colours, along with white, make TAP's post-2005 livery, stationnary and signage brand. The process of replacing the previous logo and colours was painstakingly long, the flag replacement delay being not exceptional.
This week, to muddle the waters even more, there has been a gossip here in TAP's redoubt at LIS airport that planes are to be painted in the colours of Star Alliance, TAP's partnership group, which are black, grey and white. I don't know how will this affect flags.
