Blazon: I blått en gull valmueplante. In English: Azure a poppy plant or.
Approved by the royal resolution of the 7 December 1984 after a drawing by Rolf
Tidemann after the original ideda by Knut Sørensen. [c2j87]
The design depicts an Arctic poppy or yellow poppy plant (Papaver radicatum)
found in circumpolar regions, however, a particular variant named in Norwegian
Svartis' poppy (svartisvalmue, Latin name P. r. subsp. subglobosum) is found
near Engabren, an arm of the Svartisen (The Black Ice) glacier. It has sulphur
yellow flowers - flowering among blueish ice - as represented in the arms. [c2j87]
notes that poppy is rather rare heraldic charge, but that it is found in some
German and British arms (after the [c2j87]
publication, it was also approved in the arms of Storfjord in Troms). I may add
that it also comes prominently in the modern Macedonian heraldry.
Much of what I "painfully" found in various sites and summarized above may also
be found (only if I have taken a look beofre) at
http://www.meloy.kommune.no/no/Om-Meloy/Fakta-om-Meloy/Kommunevapenet/
That site names the man who provided the original idea as Knut Øvensen.
