Background

Delta State in Nigeria was created on 27 August 1991 and is located in the south of the country bordering the Bight of Benin in the Atlantic Ocean.  The state has a wide coastal belt with many interlaced rivulets and streams which form part of the Niger River Delta.  The main economic activities are related to the oil industry and agriculture.

Delta State flag

The current Delta State flag comprises five vertical stripes of light blue, white and light blue, the central white stripe fimbriated in red.  In the centre of the white stripe is the name of the state in large light blue capital letters above the state emblem.

Previously the state flag showed a map of the state in red.  The former state emblem featured the map of the state in pale blue, superimposed on which was the Nigeria Coat of Arms in a white disc, above the name and motto of the state as shown below.
