Coat of Arms

from Facebook

During the administrations of municipal presidents Joel Guerrero Vega (1977-1979) and Vicente Mendoza Martínez (1983-1985), intents were made to adopt a municipal coat of arms for use in letterheads. Profesor Emigdio Castro Aboytes, originating from Cortazar, is recognized as the designer of the municipal coat of arms. Francisco Sauza Vega redesigned the municipal coat of arms; and from 1986, the municipal coat of arms started being used in all offices, being redesigned so it could be printed with greater clarity. It appears both people simply submitted their ideas to the Council for approval. Coat of arms according to the Encyclopedia of Municipalities and Delegations:

The field of the shield is an oval corresponding to that of a state, region, or kingdom and is framed by a border that displays as decoration five quivers for arrows which symbolize the subjugated tribes. The same field is divided into three stripes with the colors blue, symbol of royalty and majesty.
White, symbol of innocence and purity. Red, symbol of dignity, power, and sovereignty. In the blue section, which is the upper one, occupying the center of the same is the image of the Immaculate Conception, patron saint of the city. To her right [left for viewer] the golden cipher or monogram with a crown of Philip IV shines in memory of that Hispanic king conceding to Celaya the title of city [and the coat of arms] and to the left of the image of the Immaculate Conception a cave is seen, remembering that the title was obtained through Mr. de la Cueva [lit. of the Cave], duke of Albuquerque.
The white field, which is in the middle, has a leafy tree that covers various people, between which a religious Franciscan is seen, this being a representation of the foundation of the Villa in 1570, and of the first populators that reunited to do the split of lands under the shade of a corpulent mesquite tree in 1571.
Finally, in the red field, which comes to be the one under, of the motto written in ancient Italian that says DE FORTI DOLCEDO...[Of the strong is sweetness]...are two nude arms holding bows which are a display of the Chichimeca Indians.
