The Radko association was registered in Ohrid in 2000. On 21 March 2001, the Constitutional Court of Macedonia proclaimed the association illegal.
Radko is known to the public as an organization of Macedonians with Bulgarian ethnic self-consciousness. The association is named after the conspiration pseudonym of Ivan Mihailov (Novo Selo, 1896 - Rome, 1990), leader of VMRO during the interbellum. In contemporary, non-Communist Bulgarian historiography, Mihailov is a hero who fought against the Serbian authorities for the freedom of Bulgarians in Vardar Macedonia. In official Macedonian historiography, Mihailov is a terrorist and a Bulgarian chauvinist. His dream for a modern independent democratic Macedonia (according to his interviews in Bulgarian and Macedonian
media) was of a "Switzerland in the Balkan" - common fatherland of all
Macedonians, regardless of their ethnicity (Bulgarians, Albanians, Serbs,
Vlachs, Turks etc.) and religion.

According to the association's Statutes, Article 4, the flag of Radko is horizontally divided red-black, in proportions 1:2. Red and black are the colours of VMRO.
Article 4 also prescrobed the association's coat of arms as "Gules, a lion rampant doubletailed or, crowned or". This is the so-called traditional Macedonian coat of arms, taken from the Illyrian armorials, but the lion, presented on the association's website is not doubletailed, being directly taken from the coat of arms of the Republic of Bulgaria.
