Located in Tenri City Nara Prefecture and established in 1949.
The embroidered ceremonial flag has dark red background with a gold emblem with silver kanji "大學" and vertically written gold kanji university name in gold fringe.
The university flag has white background with a purplish blue symbol mark and horizontally written black English university name.
In 1925, Mr. Toshiomi Konishi, who devised the design, stated the following: The university emblem was designed by superimposing kanji 天 "Ten" of Tenri and the letter "T" of TENRI to form the framework of the design. The wings at both ends of the upper part of the emblem signify the flapping of wings for a majestic flight overseas. It symbolizes the legend of " A large bird flapping its wings toward the sea at the end of the south " in which an imaginary bird mentioned in "Zhuangzi," flew from the North China Sea to the South China Sea in a single bound. The university's emblem consists of a pillar with a "T" and a "L" for "language," indicating that it is a foreign language school. In addition, the five dots in the center of the wings represent the emblem of the plum. In April 1949, the school was reorganized as Tenri University, and the "L" was replaced by the two characters "大學" , which became the university emblem today.
The symbol mark is based on the image of a young man who is flying from Tenri University to the world. By integrating the "T" in the initial letter of TENRI into a part of the global sphere and passing a single path through it, the design dynamically and powerfully expresses the mission of Tenri University, which is to foster human resources who actively and devotedly promote activities from a global perspective toward the construction of a "Joyous Life" world.
