Presentation of Velika Gorica

The Town of Velika Gorica (63,517 inhabitants in 2011, 31,341 in the town of Velika Gorica) is located near Franjo Tuđhjman International Airport, 20 km south of Zagreb.
The status of Velika Gorica was upgraded from a Municipality to a Town by the Law on local subdivision Zakon o podrucjima županija, gradova i opcina u Republici Hrvatskoj (text), published on 28 July 2006 in the Croatian official gazette Narodne novine, No. 86.

Flag of Velika Gorica

The symbols of Velika Gorica are prescribed by Decision Odluka o izmjenama i dopunama Odluke o grbu i zastavi Grada Velike Gorice, adopted on 4 December 1997 by the Town Assembly and published on 8 January 1998 in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Velike Gorice, No. 1. This Decision amended the Decision prescribing the former symbols, which were not approved by the Ministry.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is prescribed in Article 14 of the Decision as follows:

The flag of the Town of Velika Gorica is rectangular in shape with the ratio of length to width two to one. The flag is red with the coat of arms of the Town of Velika Gorica in the centre at the crossing point of the diagonals. The coat of arms is edged with a golden-yellow border.

The only change in the description of the flag is in the colour, "claret red" being substituted by "red". This does not mean that the shade of the flag was actually changed because the state legislation does not allow colour shades to be specified in the description (although they may be specified with further prescriptions, of course).

Red was chosen as the traditional color of the Turopolje noblemen; Turopolje, a wide plain (polje) that the town covers today, is named for the extinct urus or aurochs (tur, Bos primigenius).

The flag was first officially hoisted on 13 December 1997 during the celebration of the Town Day, St. Lucia Day.

The coat of arms is prescribed in Article 7 of the Decision as follows:

The coat of arms of the Town of Velika Gorica has the shape of a heart-shaped shield: on a black field an ox (aurochs) in fighting stance holds a silver/white building with a red roof (the Turopolje Assembly house); top right three golden/yellow six-pointed stars (1/2); left a silver/white crescent.

The oxen represents an urus or aurochs (tur), for which Turopolje, a wide plain (polje) that the town covers today, is named. The building in its forelegs is the Assembly Hall of the medieval Noble Community of Turopolje, today a museum. The crescent and stars are taken from the coat of arms of the Community.

The villge of Mičevec forms a subdivision of the Town of Velika Gorica, located north-east of the town, between the Zagreb Airport, the highway and river Sava.

The ceremonial flag (photo) of Mičevec is a yellow gonfalon with three triangularly ending tails with afringe, with the name in an arch above and golden onion plant ornaments in the tails.
The coat of arms of Mičevec is "Vert a bar wavy argent between a mill-wheel and a circular stone cross in chief and a plant in base all or". The circular cross is in the shape of the medal of St. Benedict of Nursia, the oldest Christian sacramental medal, referring to the patron saint of the village and of the parish church.
