Flag of Trnovec Bartolovečki, left, design in actual use, right, prescribed design - Images by Željko Heimer, 24 May 2017
The new symbols of Trnovec Bartolovečki, designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka, were prominently displayed on 17 April 2017 (photos, photos), during the celebration of the Day of the Municipality. The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the municipal coat of arms in the center.
The flag in actual use has the coat of arms slightly modified from the adopted one (see below).
Radio Varaždin announced on 8 November 2012 (text) that the municipality had launched a competition for the symbols, which were expected to be unvelied during the celebration of its 20th anniversary (April 2013).
The competition and general guidelines for the design of the symbols were published on 6 November 2012 on the municipal website, with the deadline set up at 10 December 2012.
The municipality considered almost 60 submitted proposals, most of them matching the guidelines issued in 2012, as described in detail in the minutes of the jury session held on 28 February 2017 (available in the minutes of the Municipality Assembly held on 9 March 2017, pp. 37-41) (text).
The symbols (photo, photo) are prescribed by Decision Odluka o izboru idejnog likovnog i grafičkog obilježja (grba i
zastave) Općine Trnovac Bartolovečki (text), adopted on 9 March 2017 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 10 March 2017 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik
Varaždniske županije, No. 9.
According to municopal officials, the final Decision regarding the prescription and use of the municipal symbols is yet to be adopted. A new Municipality Assembly just elected has to be formed and is due to state on the final Decision. The approval from the Ministry of
Administration might also being waited for.
Coat of arms of Trnovec Bartolovečki, left, design in actual use, right, prescribed design - Images by Željko Heimer, 24 May 2017
The coat of arms is "Argent six fritillary flowers gules 3-2-1 a chief vert a bar
wavy of the first".
The fritillary (Croatian, kockavica), known also, among other English
names. as snake's head, chess flower, and chequered lily, has
a naturally checkered pattern reminiscent to the Crotian coat of arms.
The six of them stand for the six settlements forming the municipality.
The wavy bar represents river Drava.
Un the design in actual use, the chief is slightly smaller and the flowers are equipped with a short green stem and two small leaves. I assume the modification was done in consultation with the Ministry of Administration, that is, with the Heraldry Commission.
Decision Odluka o dodjeli nagrada za idejno likovno i grafičko obilježje (grba i zastave) Općine Trnovec Bartolovečki (text), adopted on 9 March 2017 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 10 March 2017 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždniske županije, No. 9, lists the three awarded designs: the winning one, and the two others, one by Božica Furjan from Donji Kneginec, made of a green shield with a poppy and fritillary flowers and two wavy lines between, and the other by Ladislav Volić from Trnovec, basically being the same as the 2003 proposal that was "forgotten" in the mean time, only on a blue background. We may tentatively assume that Volić was also the author of the original 2003 proposal.

According to Mayor Stjepan Hern, "there has been several attempts in the last 20 years" to select symbols. Such an attempt was reported on 5 July 2007 in the local magazine Naše novine, No. 12-13 in the occasion of the celebration of the municipality's 10th anniversary. The municipality printed a special envelope for the invitations to the celebration, depicting the proposed flags and arms, with explanatory text on the reverse of the envelope. This "commemorative envelope" is depicted in the magazine as follows:
The design proposed for the coat of arms of the municipality of Trbovec Bartolovečki features the symbols of the "Thorny crown". The main field is red, charged with a golden crown with six thorns, representing the [six] settlements of the municipality. The thorny crown is a symbol of martyrdom, seen in the figures of martyrs, patrons of each settlement. At the top of the shield is a wavy bar representing the Drava river being the northern border of the municipal territory, while in the bottom is an other, narrower, wavy line, representing the Zbel stream, the symbol of cleanliness of the region.
The envelope pictures the proposed flag, which appears to be also red,
with the proposed coat of arms in the centre. The proposed symbols are canting, trn meaning "a thorn" in Croatian.
The design was apparently not adopted, and for the reasons we may only
speculate. Possibly it was not approved by the central
authorities. Since the Mayor who signed the envelope was still in office for the 20th anniversary, the symbols could have been adopted in the meantime, unless there was some opposition to the proposed symbols - the local magazine is silent on that.
Ceremonial flag of Trnovec Bartolovečki - Image by Željko Heimer, 24 May 2017
The ceremonial flag is a blue gonfalon ending triangularly, bordered with a yellow ribbon and golden fringe along the bottom, with the coat of arms in the centre, the municipality name in three lines above it, and a green poppy with two red flowers, two buds and three large leaves.

The village of Žabnik got a coat of arms and flag, as reported on 21 April 2011 in the local magazine Sportsko društvo Žabnik, Naše novine - List općine Trnovec Bartolovečki, No. 27.
The article depicts the flag, but unfortunately only in black and
white, without indicating colours. The flag is horizontally divided in three stripes, probably red-white-blue like the national flag, with a circular coat of arms (image), "Quarterely argent and gules a letter Ž between a stork and a frog adorsed and in the base on a ribbon inscribed 'ŽABNIK'."
