The municipality of Rigas Feraios (10,922 inhabitants in 2011; 55,060 ha) was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities of Feres (Φερές, 5,752 inh.), Karla (Κάρλα, 4,747 inh.), and Keramidi (Κεραμίδι, 423 inh.).

The flag of Rigas Feraios (photo) is white with the municipal emblem, which features a portrait of the municipality's namesake.
The seat of the municipality is Velestino (3,403 ha), the birth town of
Rigas Feraois (1760-1708), a Greek patriot and poet. In 1793, he
edited in Vienna, then home of a large Greek community, a Greek-language newspaper, Ephemeris (Daily), and a map of Greater Greece, which
included Constantinople. While attempting to communicate with Napoléon
Bonaparte, Rigas was betrayed and arrested in Trieste by the Austrian police; with five of his collaborators, he was executed in
Constantinople upon order of Sultan Selim III.
